Dallas Wedding Planner Interview | Chelsea Rose

I’m so excited to share the following interview and photos with you! Chelsea Rose is an amazing wedding consultant (the title she prefers) who is transitioning from working for an event space to running her own freelance consulting business. Chelsea was my wedding consultant and I must say that my wedding day would have been tumultuous without her there. When I arrived at my wedding space the day of, the venue (Lofty Spaces) had been completely transformed and looked more beautiful than I could have ever imagined (with my permission, she changed the ceremony location which ended up being a MUCH better place). She also dealt with all of the vendors throughout the day. It turns out that our caterers never came to pick up their serving trays and utensils, and no one in my family even knew about it! I’m so glad I didn’t have to deal with all of those little hiccups on my wedding day.

I think you’ll be surprise to learn all the different levels of services offered by wedding planners – they aren’t just for big, grandiose weddings. The DIY bride can benefit as well!DALLAS WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHY BY DALLAS WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHER AMANDA DANIELS

How did you get involved in the wonderful world of weddings?
The short answer is I followed a desire in my heart, placed there, first by God and reinforced by Martin Short and Jennifer Lopez. The summer between my 2nd and 3rd year of college, I landed a job assistant coordinating up to three wedding a week at a Lakeside venue in Grapevine, TX. Word of my sincere enjoyment of the planning and coordinating process spread to newly engaged ladies, and before I knew it I was involved in the planning process for more weddings than I could count. This is my passion. I am blessed to be able to see it through from hobby to career.AMANDA DANIELS DALLAS WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHER IN DALLAS, TX

I feel like more brides would hire a wedding coordinator if they knew more about the range and scope of their services. Can you give us an example of what  you offer, and how you cater to specific budgets?
Wedding Professionals are there to make your dream come true. You have one, let us help you. Here are many different levels of involvement for such professionals. There are planners that can walk you through each and every detail from invitations to catering to the getaway vehicle. Day of Coordination leads the set up process and makes sure each area of the ceremony and reception go off with a limited amount of hitches. Consultants can hit each and every one of these areas. If you simply need some guidance or want to take advantage of the resources a professional has, this is a good route. Hiring wedding help does not have to be expensive. The price, depending on amount of involvement, is generally directly related to the overall cost of the wedding and a percentage is taken out for the service. I have worked nearly every price range of wedding, and there is always a cost effective, buyer friendly way to incorporate a “wedding aide,” if you will.

What does a wedding day look like in the life of a wedding coordinator?
My main focus? Keeping the bride as happy and on Cloud Nine as possible. I want her to have full confidence in me. I do not stop moving from Set up to tear down. Except during the ceremony, for a just a bit, I stop and look at the beautiful display of love and devotion that is taking place at the front of the room. That moment is what motivates me to bring the entire event full circle.

What is a common misconception that brides have about their wedding day?
Many brides get caught up in the details. That’s my job. You go marry the love of your life and have fun. I have heard so many stories about bride-to-bes anticipating a stressful affair. My heart aches for them. It is my role to transfer your stress to my job. I WANT your day to be a joyous affair in hindsight.AMANDA DANIELS DALLAS WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHER IN DALLAS, TX

What do you think is the best way for the bride and groom to enjoy their wedding day as much as possible?
My first rule of thumb on this subject is to keep them fed. It breaks my heart when a couple tells me that they paid for all this wonderful food, but never got to taste it. I personally make sure the bride and groom get the first crack at all the edible portions of the event. Second, I intend to thoroughly discuss “business matters” prior to the wedding. Yes, there will be times that I’ll need to ask some quick questions to make sure everything is going their way, but for the most part, I would like to have all the nitty gritty taken care of beforehand, so I can do my job and they can just relax.AMANDA DANIELS DALLAS WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHER IN DALLAS, TX

How would you describe the style of your work?
My style is entirely YOU driven. I like to meet with the couple to just get a sense of their chemistry and personalities. When I have a better understand of their love story, I can better accomplish their goals. After all, isn’t that a wedding? A reflection of the continuing journey these two people have decided to enjoy together. Every couple is different, and they want different things, I want to do my very best to reflect that.

I have come to a point in my [healthy] obsession with weddings, where I can picture a ceremony nearly ANYWHERE. My inspiration, as cheesy as it sounds, is love and pretty things. I frequent wedding and crafty blogs, searching for ideas. I also enjoy looking at a couple’s engagement pictures to pull ideas from.

Do you have a favorite wedding coordinator memory?
To date, my favorite coordinating moment was listening to a voicemail from Teresa “the Cake Lady” on my way to the Denver Airport. I was about to catch a flight to attend and coordinate the wedding of my dear friend, Amanda Daniels (hey wait, that’s me!). As I sifted through day-of details, returned the call, and practiced my best “coordinator voice,” I realized, “This is real. I’m not holding a pretend wedding in my childhood room, barking orders to my pets and stuffed animals. I am actually living my fantasy.”

What do you love most about your job?
I love telling a story. I love when all the details come together and you hear a guest say, “That is SO them!” If you cannot see the story in the details, I have not done my job. I also simply love doing things for other people. Nothing brings my heart more joy than when I lend a helping hand. If I can help you tell your love story in a few hours and a meal, I’m happy.

Thanks, Chelsea Rose, for your insight into the wedding planning industry and what it can offer brides of all budgets and styles. So interesting, and I love your passion for the industry!

101 in 1001

When I was in college I kept a list of my “major” accomplishments and it always felt really good to look back and reflect on these old times. Some of these feats include eating an insect (it was earth day), jumping off a bridge (I almost died in Slyvenia) and learning how to flip while dancing (I almost died in Oklahoma, but tried this one again and mastered it. Unlike bridge jumping, which I will NEVER do again).

When I saw this idea of making a list of 101 things you want to do in 1,001 days, the idea really intrigued me. 101 ideas turns out to be a lot more than it seems like it would. I was rolling, really rolling, on the first few. Then I did the math and realized that in order to actually complete the list you have to do 10 things every day. So, if you so choose to read this list, it might start off seeming like a bucket list and then toward the end it might seem more like a….to-do list. But I like to keep it real.

  • 1. Be an attendant in a wedding
  • 2. Be a mentor for a child through Big Brothers Big Sisters
  • 3. Attend a Letterpress class
  • 4. Get Wes an awesome present (he always outshines me for gift giving!)
  • 5. Visit my sister in Japan
  • 6. Backpack through Europe with Wes
  • 7. Find a church home in Dallas
  • 8. Get a pet (and not a fish!)
  • 9. Attend a photography workshop
  • 10. Photograph my first pastor’s family
  • 11. Organize/print/store my personal photos
  • 12. Go on a trip with my 2 best girl friends
  • 13. Pay off my student loans

  • 19. Design and print my personal wedding album

  • 26. Restructure workflow to get wedding photos to clients 2-3 weeks after wedding
  • 27. Watch “Father of the Bride”
  • 28. Get rid of 20 more clothing items (I already ditched so much when I got married, but I still need to let go of a few things that I’m, ahem, too “strong” for now…or that are outdated. Who knew all graphic tees don’t stand the test of time?).
  • 29. Try 5 of the recipes given to me at wedding showers (1/5)
  • 30. Hold a fun contest on my blog
  • 31. Buy a new camera bag or Shootsac
  • 32. Join a married people small group in church once we find one
  • 33. Take beautiful portraits of my two best girl friends and my sister

  • 41. Host a shower for a friend
  • 42. Organize my computer files (nightmare…)
  • 43. Take a dance class with Wes (One of my FAVORITE activities – maybe it will become one of his?)
  • 43. Bring our canvas grocery bags to the grocery store at least….once
  • 44. Shoot a boudoir session for a bride or wife
  • 45. Make the bed every day for a month
  • 46. Buy an L series prime lens
  • 47. Run/Walk (but maybe hopefully mostly run) a 10k (Have I ever done a 5k? No, but don’t worry about it).

  • 61. Unsubscribe to all the annoying junk e-mail I don’t like getting
  • 62. Read another one of the C.S. Lewis books I bought in high school (this would bring me to 2 of 9)
  • 63. Try a new artisan cheese (with red wine pairing, of course).
  • 64. Take my “real” camera to more personal events, and use it
  • 65. Print branded greeting cards
  • 66. Take and post pictures of our apartment so our family can see where we live!
  • 67. Get a desk lamp
  • 68. Take Wes to a concert in Deep Ellum
  • 69. Go kayaking again
  • 70. Go to a vineyard
  • 71. Go to a museum I haven’t been to in DFW
  • 72. Get another “Brazilian Blowout.” My hairdresser gave me one as a wedding present and it was AMAZING and reality-defying. I’m going to be so sad when it wears out, unless I immediately complete this goal.
  • 73. See “Spring Awakening” when it comes to Fort Worth
  • 74. Go to a fitness class

  • 85. Get our tickets to Charleston for Brad/Brennan’s wedding
  • 86. Watch the last episodes of Oprah and Tyra (I think I’ll miss you the most, TyTy)…even though we don’t have TV service
  • 87. Write 101 reasons why I love Wes (although 101 goals is seaming like A LOT, but that should be easier, right?)
  • 88. Try eyebrow threading
  • 89. Send a secret to Post Secret
  • 90. Open a Health Savings Account
  • 91. Find a good Lebanese restaurant in Dallas (it seems like all there is is Mexican restaurants…)
  • 92. Spend a non-vacation weekend without using the computer or internet (my body just got tense with fear. I went back to delete this goal, but that’s probably a sign I should leave it on)
  • 93. Have a photo shoot of just myself
  • 94. Go to the dentist once a year….oh gosh….
  • 95. Put some music on my iPhone
  • 96. Use the iPod running plug-in thing I bought….last Christmas
  • 97. Send a “real” Facebook message or e-mail to a friend that doesn’t live close once a week
  • 98. Go on a “couples trip” with friends
  • 99. Make it to a decade without drinking a soda (which will be summer 2011 – wow!)
  • 100. Watch Conan O’Brien’s first TBS show (Again, the problem of not having a TV service)
  • 101. See Conan O’Brien (OK, this one is a cheat – I already did this before I made the list. But I had wanted to see him since 6th grade, so I think it counts as a respectable accomplishment. And I wanted to cross something off the list.

If you decide to make a 101 in 1001 be sure to post it in the comments section! Looking back on this list, it would take some pretty serious dedication to complete all of these. I’ll keep you updated on the adventure!

Alejandra - These were awesome. #34 reminds me of the movie “I Love You, Man”
I want to do 89 too, maybe while you’re here we can do that
Good luck fulfilling these goals, stay motivated and you can do it!

Amanda - Thanks for all the feedback everyone! And thanks to everyone offering help with accomplishing them – I have great people in my life!

We tried Watermark last week. We were overwhelmed by the largeness but like all the different ministries they have.

I decline to comment on how long it took me to come up with the list ;)

August 26, 2010 - 12:54 pm

Hayley - - I may start going to Watermark Church off LBJ. I’ve been a couple times and it is a really neat community.

- I suggest going to float the Comal River in the New Braunfels, TX area and visit Gruene, TX. You would LOVE it I think. And eat at the Gristmill. Amazingness.

- Can’t wait to meet up in Dallas soon!

August 26, 2010 - 12:11 pm

Patty - Oh, and one more thing

Dresser Mansion Wedding: Sommer + Jared Married!

Sommer + Jared had a Fourth of July wedding celebration at the Dresser Mansion in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Sommer + Jared live in Tennessee and had a private ceremony in their home state, but wanted to have a special wedding celebration with their friends + family back in Oklahoma. When Sommer e-mailed me and asked if I would be interested in shooting a celebration that included a vintage typewriter guestbook, a J Crew gown and their fun-loving dog Abby I of course said YES and couldn’t wait for their special day!

Speaking of J Crew, Sommer is a manager there and has IMPECCABLE style. I think these shoes serve as proof!

Sommer’s sister helped her get ready, then she helped Jared get ready :)
